Planning a trip to visit family soon and trying to figure out the best route. I’d like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that a bit tricky. Avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, so I’m weighing my options. I’ve heard different stories about folks who've had to deal with this and how they handled it. Someone mentioned taking an alternate route through Pennsylvania, but I’m not sure if that’s really better. Anyone else tackled this before? Just looking for some ideas since I know it doesn’t have to be perfect.

NY is a pain, I take I-80 through PA to skip it, adds 2 hours. Lock the gun unloaded in a trunk case, ammo separate, keeps it legal. I use a small safe in my SUV.

If you travel with a gun through NYS, not only does it have ot be locked up, ammo separate, but you can't make any stops other than gas or food.
