This may sound crazy, but i think a section of bushcraft might spur some interest.

I only say this because the very things bushcraft folks do actually involve many of the things sporting people do...

Knives.
Stoves
Preparing meat.
Surviving when accidents happen.
Shelter.
Clothing
Axes
Making fire.


And other things that anyone can run into via hunting, fishing, hiking, and what-not.
