Started working on a rifle project that shifted gears midway and now I’m left with a bare Remington 700 short action. Before I make any decisions, I’d love to know what builds you would recommend.

Thanks and merry christmas.

A 6.5 Creedmoor or a .308 for a precision/hunting crossover. They’re super easy to build and tune, and you can get them incredibly accurate without having to search for rare parts. But if I’m looking for something with a bit more flair, I’d definitely lean towards the 7mm-08.

I’ll admit, there’s always a little voice in my head that wants to convert one into a .223 trainer with a heavy barrel. It’s cheap, fun to shoot, and you’ll end up using it way more than you’d expect.

That’s one of those rifles where the action itself is the real starting point, everything else just depends on what you want it to become.

Bare 700 short action is genuinely one of the better starting points out there. McMillan stock, Timney trigger and a quality barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor would be where I started thinking seriously.

The OP hasn't been back in nearly six months. So this isn't about what should be built, just what I've learned. A model 700 is an okay starting point if you already own an action or rifle.

If you have a build in mind, using a custom action with a 700 footprint will often save you time and money. Especially with a few simple tools and a prefit barrel, most with very little aptitude can assemble a rifle in an afternoon. Drop it in a stock or chassis an be out shooting the next morning.

That's pretty much where I've landed too. The 700 still makes sense if you already have one on hand but starting from scratch, a quality custom 700-footprint action and prefit barrel can simplify the whole process and often ends up being the better value.
