Apishapa Speedgoat trip… it was a bust but a good time.

My son and I went down to the Apishapa SWA for a few days to try to fill his Pronghorn tag for the second year in a row… second year going, that is. Last year was a goose egg as well, but at least we saw them and even managed a good 1400 yard stalk to about 90 yards… unfortunately we weren’t able to get a good shot before a small plane flew low overhead and sent them off onto private land.
This year we saw a few on the way in but nothing on the area, not even any really recent sign… another hunter stopped us as we were heading back into the southern entrance and told us he had just seen a family of mountain lions wandering around.
That was on the second afternoon, so we decided to take a quick look around and then call it quits… the area isn’t big enough to hold much game anyway, and with lions around, the chances of finding anything is slim to none.
Any trip to the woods is a good trip, though, and we had a great time.
Next year we will probably look at some different areas, although the Apishapa SWA and Apishapa North STL are really cool places. Maybe we’ll try to find some private land to hunt, or go to one of the Grasslands.

I just think you absolutely crushed it on that hunt. Even though you didn’t fill your tag, stalking that animal from 1400 yards down to 90 is seriously impressive. It takes a ton of patience, skill, and a lot of grit to pull that off. And the whole plane and lions situation is just wild. I love how the outdoors always has a way of throwing surprises at us, but it sounds like you took it all in stride and made the most out of your adventure. Spending time in nature with your son, even if you didn’t come home with a harvest, is truly what it’s all about. I think looking at the Grasslands for next year is a great idea. Who knows what kind of new experiences await you there? Keep us posted!

I agree… the hunt (both seasons) was well worth the effort even though we didn’t connect.
The stalk in to 90 yards was almost a once in a lifetime experience… taking the doe would have been icing on the cake but even just the stalk itself was pretty epic.
I do believe next year we are going to look into other areas. We’ve even tossed around the idea of going to Wyoming but we’ll see what happens.
I’ll definitely update as we go…
